Disasters that happened around the world this week.
Let’s run through some disasters that happened around the world this week as well as some severe weather, hurricane, and fire outlooks for the upcoming week.
July 4
Texas Hill Country Floods
Beginning early in the morning on July 4th, a torrential amount of rainfall began falling over the Texas Hill Country north and west of San Antonio. Several areas were receiving rain rates anywhere from 3-6 inches of rain per hour. This caused significant flash flooding throughout the region that would take the lives of 121 people as of July 10 with 171 people still missing in the region.
July 5
Glendora Tanker Car Derailment
Approximately 18 cars from a Canadian Railway Train derailed near Glendora, Mississippi causing a spill of benzene that burned for several hours. The town was evacuated after the derailment and a boil water notice was put in place. Eventually the fire department was able to extinguish the fire. Air monitoring has been ongoing in the area to determine the level of exposure for residents.
July 7
Ramses Exchange Fire
A massive fire broke out on the 7th floor of the Ramses Central Exchange located in Cairo, Egypt. This is a major telecommunications center and the fire caused a significant drop in internet connectivity as well as the complete shut down of trading on the Egyptian stock exchange. The fire killed 4 individuals and injured numerous others. The cause is currently under investigation.
July 8
Ruidoso Flash Floods
Monsoonal rains caused significant flash flooding in the area of Ruidoso, New Mexico. The Rio Ruidoso rose approximately 20 feet in 30 minutes after torrential rains fell over the burn scar left by the South Fork Fire in the area from 2024. At least 3 people have been killed with 4 people still missing.
July 9
California Tunnel Collapse
31 construction workers became trapped underground when a tunnel collapsed with them inside. They were located 450 feet underground in the 18 foot diameter tunnel approximately 6 miles from the access point for the tunnel. Los Angeles Fire Department arrived on scene and assisted in rescuing all 31 workers without any major injuries.
